A compelling mid-19th century oil portrait depicting a seated gentleman presented in the scholarly tradition of American professional portraiture. The sitter is shown turned slightly to the side, dressed in a dark coat with high cravat and white shirtfront, his distinctive mutton-chop sideburns placing the work stylistically in the circa 1845–1855 period.

Beside him rests a draped table displaying a small arrangement of symbolic objects: a human skull, a book, and what appears to be measuring calipers. These elements were traditionally used in portraiture to signify intellectual pursuits and likely reference the sitter’s connection to medicine, anatomy, or scientific study—fields that flourished in New England during the mid-19th century. Such attributes often appear in portraits of physicians, lecturers, and scholars associated with institutions such as Harvard Medical School.

The composition reflects the conventions of American academic portraiture of the era: a dark atmospheric background, warm highlights across the sitter’s face, and a red upholstered studio chair lending visual depth. While it's unsigned, the work bears the hallmarks of regional portrait painting influenced by artists working in Boston during this period.

Found in the Boston area, the portrait offers a striking glimpse into the intellectual culture of mid-19th century New England and the tradition of commemorating learned professionals through symbolic portraiture.

Housed in a contemporary frame, the work in great condition for its age. It does have craquelure throughout, but is stable. It measures 17 2/4" x 14 1/2".
