Victorian Faux Tortoise Shell and Silver Vesta

A charming antique vesta case (match safe), made of rich, glossy faux tortoiseshell and beautifully decorated with delicate sterling silver pique inlay — a fine scrolling floral design surrounding a vacant oval cartouche, likely left blank for a monogram. The hinged lid opens via a push-catch to reveal a textured striking surface built into the underside, with the case sized to hold a small supply of wax vesta matches.

Vesta cases like this were an essential Victorian and Edwardian smoking accessory, designed to protect early friction matches from damp and accidental ignition, and carried in a pocket or on a chain. 

This piece is in good condition, with the striker and push-catch working smoothly. it measures 2”x2”x1”
