Dramatic 19th-century oil on canvas depicting Mount Vesuvius erupting at night, dated 26 April 1872. The atmospheric scene captures the volcano glowing intensely against a darkened sky, with the illuminated eruption reflected across the water and a silhouetted coastal town stretching along the shoreline below. A solitary tree and softly rendered foreground landscape add depth to the composition.

The painting has a wonderfully moody, romantic quality, with deep greens, charcoal blacks, and warm orange and ochre tones creating the effect of moonlight and volcanic fire. The dark, heavily atmospheric treatment is particularly evocative of the celebrated tradition of 19th-century Neapolitan/Vesuvius eruption paintings, which were popular with travelers during the Grand Tour era and remain highly collectible.

The reverse retains an old handwritten paper label, apparently reading “… Vesuvio” and “26 Aprile 1872,” corresponding to the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius that began in April 1872. The painting is housed in a vintage gilt wood frame and is unsigned. The painting measures 26”x 16 1/4”.

Condition: Antique condition with extensive craquelure, and very minor paint loss. Signs of age consistent with its period. The reverse label is fragmented and partially illegible. Please examine photographs carefully for condition details.
