Antique Boulle Napoleon III Marquetry Box
A striking antique Boulle-style casket box, richly adorned with intricate inlay that immediately evokes the opulence of the Napoleon III period. The front features symmetrical panels of scrolling foliate ornament in warm tortoiseshell tones paired with gleaming brass inlay—hallmarks of the technique pioneered by André-Charles Boulle.
The ormolu-mounted frame is finely cast with detailed floral borders and elegant feet, adding depth and dimension while framing the bold marquetry. The interior suggests it was originally a tea caddy or liquor cave, but has since lost the interior pieces or decanters. A central key escutcheon with decorative tassel enhances its presentation.
Dating to the late 19th century, this piece reflects the revival of Boulle work during the Napoleon III era, when historic styles were reinterpreted with dramatic flair. Both decorative and functional, it serves beautifully as a statement vanity box or collector’s piece—offering a timeless blend of craftsmanship, contrast, and French grandeur.
- The box measures 11" long, 6" wide, and sits 7 1/2" tall.
- Disclaimers: While the box has its original key, the lock is not functioning. There is a crack along the inside of the top, although it does not show from the exterior. There's also cracking to the interior framing that originally held the tea canisters or bottles. There is minor loss of shell on the top and cracking, which is commiserate to the age.
