Pair of Antique Giltwood Mirrored Plateaus
A lovely pair of antique giltwood plateaus, each with a shaped, scalloped shield-form frame surrounding a beautifully aged mirror insert. The mirror glass has softened and foxed with time, giving it that romantic, cloudy antique quality that's impossible to replicate.
The gilt frames show wonderful old surface including soft, worn gilding with the red bole undercoat visible at the edges and high points, a hallmark of genuine aged giltwood rather than a modern reproduction.
These small plateaus were traditionally used beneath a pair of candlesticks, perfume bottles, or a small garniture, letting the mirrored surface double the light and sparkle of whatever sits on top. They're equally lovely used simply as a jewelry or vanity tray, or styled together on a shelf or mantel.
Sold as a pair. Please see photos for full condition details, including wear to the gilt and foxing to the mirror glass. New backings have more recently been added to help stabilize the mirrors. Each measure --
